This diorama tells a nostalgic story of my family as well as most rural migrant families in China. Our house was in Daqiao village, Sichuan, China before we moved to the city. I used to wander around my grandmother’s wooden mud-covered house all the time. The sight of my grandmother praying every morning, the bruises I would be covered in after playing with my little piggy and the smell of freshly cooked rice and charcoal was an everyday occurrence in this quiet unassuming village. It is a distant place that is unachievable ever since we sold our land and old house to acquire better educational resources and medical facilities in the city. Despite that, the old bits and pieces of this place are forever imprinted in my mind. I miss the warm-hearted neighborhood, my grandmother’s fresh, green vegetables, my cute piggy, and our small but tight-knit family.  To enshrine these memories to a physical medium was my intention with this piece. I wish this piece can preserve and remind me of the memories that I will never be able to relive again, like many rural migrant families in search of a better future.
